Chart-topping locks help music studio find its groove

Cage Riot Studios lets musicians and creatives make music while also promoting themselves by producing a regular stream of ‘content’ to keep fans engaged on social media. Equipped with state-of-the-art music and video production technology, the studio needed a way to control access to its various rehearsal and production spaces while also giving artists a flexible and hassle-free experience. The CL5210 NetCode® struck the right chord, and now, thanks to Codelocks’ solution, Cage Riot Studios has reliable, self-service access to its studios that its customers enjoy.

Discordant access in need of tuning

Cage Riot Studios is an LA-based rehearsal and recording space that gives artists the ability to practice and record new music while also making attractive online video content for marketing and social media. The studio comprises three recording and rehearsal rooms that are open 24-hours a day and which can be booked for hourly to daily slots via its website.

As with many music studios, Cage Riot Studios has a large amount of specialist instruments and music production technology. It had also renovated its studios to have versatile and beautifully decorated spaces equipped with sets, stages, venue lighting, and cameras including GoPros.

Cage Riot Studios needed a flexible access control solution that:

  • Gives selective temporary access to different spaces for customizable dates and time frames.

  • Makes sharing self-service access easy and remote.

  • Enhances the customer experience at the studio.

  • Managers and musicians can rely on.

A harmonious solution without a key change

Cage Riot Studios Managing Partner and CFO, Craig Claro, had personal experience with poor locks in the past, having toured with musicians extensively. For him, it was vital that the studio’s locking solution made a good impression on users.

“Many times, using other products I found myself messaging support or hosts explaining the dreaded… ‘We are stuck outside your place, in the middle of the night, hungry, tired, with all our gear, and we can’t get in,’” he said.

After using a Codelocks lock at another venue, Craig knew that it was the right lock for Cage Riot Studios. His first-hand experience assured him that a Codelocks solution would create the right customer experience in his studio.

He commented, “I remembered these brushed-steel locks by Codelocks that needed no lengthy instruction or complicated methods to open, and they always worked! So, I reached out to the team and I was quickly provided with excellent service from several members at Codelocks earnestly looking to help me.”

Alfredo Mondragon, Senior Technician at Codelocks, commented, “Considering the flexibility and time-sensitive access that Cage Riot Studios needed, combined with the importance of reliability, we suggested the CL5210 NetCode®. It’s a robust lock that’s been successfully installed in other music studios and similar applications.”

The CL5210 NetCode® is a heavy-duty electronic mortise tubular latch lock equipped with Codelocks’ NetCode® Technology that allows users to generate date and time-sensitive temporary access codes shareable via email or SMS. The mortise lock is part of the CL5000 NetCode® Range. The codes are generated effortlessly through Codelocks’ Connect Portal, or can be integrated into bespoke software using the Codelocks API. NetCodes can be created to allow access for one hour or up to one year, and can be configured for single- or multi-use.

The electronic lock is battery-powered and will operate 200,000 times per battery set. No internet connection is required for customers’ codes to work, and the process is fully remote and enables self-service access without the need for keys or fobs. In case of forgotten codes, the CL5210 has ‘master code’ access and code-free, keyed entry.

Pitch-perfect, self-service results

Cage Riot can now effortlessly and remotely manage access control for musicians and artists using its recording and rehearsal studios through a simple process. Musicians book a time slot through the Cage Riot Studio website, then studio managers log into the Codelocks Connect Portal to create a one-time access code for their booking. The studio manager then emails the code to the musicians, who then have hassle-free, self-service access to the space as soon as they arrive at the studio.

Having self-service access is something customers appreciate a lot, which has led to an enhanced overall customer experience. “The customers love that there is no unnecessary interaction with a staff member”, said Craig. Adding, “Our customer experience is rated higher because we have Codelocks.”

Staff at Cage Riot Studios appreciate the dependability and reliability of Codelocks’ lock too.

As Craig commented, “The reliability of the product is probably the highest of any I have experienced. Anytime you use the features it has always functioned as needed. Internet down? Lock still works. Power outage? Lock still works.”

An additional benefit for the studio is a direct cost saving. Because access is controlled remotely, Cage Riot Studios does not need to have staff at the studio at all times.

“Less staff means less overhead and that translates to lower costs”, explained Craig. This has led to a more efficient use of the studio’s time and resources.

Ultimately, Cage Riot Studios wanted a lock that bucked the trend of their personal negative past experiences accessing studios, and Codelocks’ CL5210 NetCode® certainly does.

Craig summed up his positive experience by saying, “If you want your money’s worth in a product that performs as described and expected, in an industrial and repeated use environment, this product will not let you down.”
